SINGLE-MODE CABLES
Used for long haul telecommunication systems, for
fiber to the home systems and for industrial
applications. Single-mode fibers transmit
ultraviolet, 320nm light, through infrared, 1550nm
light including visible light. Connectors used for
wavelengths shorter then 1060nm are tuned for low
insertion loss.
PM CABLES
Used in Telecommunication systems between the
laser source and the modulator that sends the signal
as well as sensors and specialty photonics. PM
cables transmit single-mode light from 400nm to
1550nm while maintaining the alignment of the
polarized light. Up to 35dB extinction ratio is
available in PM terminations.
MULTIMODE CABLES
Used for local area networks in buildings or for
transmitting light in industrial applications. With
core sizes from 50um to 1,000um these fibers are
easier to couple light into and can transmit more
power then single-mode cables
COMPONENT TERMINATIONS
Active and passive components such as lasers,
splitters, and attenuators are supplied without
connectors. Connectors or ferrules installed while
protecting them against ESD within 2 days of
receiving the component is typical.
MILITARY CABLES
Whether multiple fibers are routed in a single 38999
shell or a single fiber needs to fly in space special
care must be taken in selecting materials and in
building the cables. Material tracking, travelers,
and Certificate of Conformance are all part of
building a cable that must work without failure.
HIGH POWER CABLES
As high power lasers come down in cost and the
applications that require them goes up the use of
high power cables is becoming much more
common. The biggest risk in these systems is
burning of the fiber core at the fiber terminations
due to contamination from the environment or from
the termination itself. Properly built connectors can
handle 0.05 Watts/Square micron of power in the
core.
FIBER BUNDLES
Fiber bundles route multiple fibers to a common
location or detector. Whether 2 fibers are in an
E-2000 connector, 19 fibers in an FC connector, or
37 fibers in an SMA connector care must be taken
to insure tight packing of the fibers with minimal
stress.
REFERENCE CABLES
When testing cables or components the quality of
the test cable is critical, as you do not want to pass
failing components or fail passing components.
Having the best quality, highly documented
reference cable greatly reduces the risk of this
happening.
FIBER POLISHING
Fibers require polishing for coupling to lasers,
detectors, or in medical applications. Fibers
polished at 0° reflect more light but are harder to
couple to then fibers polished at an angle. PM
fibers sometimes require the angle polished relative
to the stress rods in the fiber.
